The Surgeon General and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services launched The Healthy People 2010 Initiative. Healthy People 2010 is the health prevention agenda for the nation. It is a statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to an individual’s health and establish national goals to reduce these threats. It is aimed at improving the health of all Americans, eliminating disparities in health, and improving years and quality of life.
The leading health indicators help you understand the importance of health promotion and disease prevention in order to improve your health in the next decade.
Review the list below and identify the items that are problematic for you. Then make an appointment in Student Health Services to discuss these problem areas and develop your own plan for compliance.
Leading Health Indicators
- Get regular physical activity
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Avoid tobacco use
- Avoid alcohol and drug abuse
- Practice responsible sexual behavior
- Maintain good mental health, seek treatment when needed
- Prevent injury and violence
- Maintain good environmental quality (air and water)
- Maintain recommended vaccines
- Have access to quality health care
- Have a health check-up regularly
Surgeon General's Prescription for Health
- Moderate physical activity, at least 5 days a week, at least 30 minutes a day.
- Avoid toxins - tobacco, illicit drugs, and abuse of alcohol.
- Eat a healthy diet. Eat at least 5 servings of a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. Avoid fats, added sugar, and salt. Eat in moderation.
- Responsible sexual behavior, abstinence where appropriate.
- Get preventive health screenings.
