Student Health Services FAQs
What is Student Health Services?
We are a fully functioning health clinic with board certified healthcare providers. We have a location on Fairfax campus in SUB I, and locations on the Prince William and Arlington campuses. We offer the same types of services as a regular doctor’s office. All services are confidential.
How much does it cost to be seen?
There is no charge to be seen by a healthcare provider at Student Health Services. There are minimal fees for lab procedures, medications, treatments, dressings, or supplies.
Who is eligible to be seen at SHS?
Any currently enrolled Mason student.
Do you have doctors at Student Health Services?
Yes, we have board certified doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other medical specialists who work together to help you.
Do I need health insurance to be seen at Student Health Services?
No, we do not accept insurance. However, if you have health insurance it may help to cover outside lab fees that might be incurred, so bring your insurance card if you have one. We use Quest Lab.
Can I just walk-in today and be seen?
We usually have walk-in space available for acute or emergency illness or injuries. For a non-urgent concern you can make an appointment by calling or stopping by.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Bring your Mason ID, a method of payment in case there are any fees, and your insurance card if you have one in case lab work is needed.
Are you affiliated with Counseling and Psychological Services?
The healthcare providers at Student Health Services work closely with the staff at Counseling and Psychological Services to best meet the needs of Mason students. There is no fee for Mason students to be seen in Counseling and Psychological Services.
I have an ongoing medical concern, should I talk with Student Health Services about it?
Yes. If you have an ongoing medical concern, please make an appointment to talk with one of our providers. Please bring in, or send in, your medical records for your appointment. Making Student Health Services aware of your health concern, and establishing a relationship with a healthcare provider here on campus, will help us help you if a problem should arise.
Do you offer HIV testing?
Yes.
Do you offer STI (STD) testing?
Yes.
Do you have late or evening hours?
Yes, during the Fall and Spring semesters.
Can I get a routine physical at Student Health Services?
We only offer physicals to students who are nursing majors, ROTC, or athletes; for a fee.
What if I need an x-ray or lab work?
We have a limited lab onsite and we send out to Quest Lab when necessary. We do not perform x-rays here, but we can send you to local radiologists.

I’m taking birth control pills. I had a Pap test at my doctor’s office within the past 12 months; can I get a refill at Student Health Services?
Yes. Come-in and fill-out a medical release form. We will fax it to your doctor’s office. Once we receive the results from your latest Pap test, we can schedule you an appointment with a healthcare provider who will refill your birth control prescription.
Do you have a pharmacy?
Yes. It is limited, yet useful for the healthcare providers here at Student Health Services. You can be seen by our providers, free of charge, and get a prescription filled by our pharmacy for a minimal fee. We do not fill prescriptions written by providers outside of Student Health Services.
Can I get a copy of my medical records?
Yes. Stop-by Student Health Services, fill-out and sign a medical release form; expect a 2-5 day processing time and a fee. For immunization records there is no processing time and no fee.
Can I have my current medical records sent to Student Health Services from my healthcare provider?
Yes. Stop-by Student Health Services fill-out and sign a medical release form. We will fax it to your healthcare provider and, in most cases, they will send us your records.
I need to have lab work done for an outside healthcare provider, can I just do the lab work at Student Health Services?
Yes. Call and make an appointment to hours and locations. Fees will apply. Bring your insurance card if you have one.
